Amazing! I got surprised by an email indicating that #ctabustracker.com got redesigned. The email was from #ilcta Illinois Chicago Transit Authority’s services which I subscribed to more than a decade ago. That’s the time when I was managing a project delivering the first version of #ChicagoTribune mobile apps for #iOS and #Android devices.
Besides #Tribune Editorial and news articles, it highlighted Chicago Transit Authority’s bus routes, schedules, and live bus locations on the streets.
Unlike today’s AWS solutions, in those days, we had to custom design solutions to cache data to save API calls to CTA services and consume those in the mobile apps. Another struggle was with devices’ GPS location or cell tower triangulation to show nearby bus stops.
The second biggest challenge, it was developed offshore in Bangalore, India location. Validating the live CTA bus locations feature sitting in Bangalore!
I had to keep the project on track and under budget as Tribune had planned the launch of their first step in mobile space; they printed full-page marketing ads in Chicago Tribune prints.
It was a fun time!
